Opportunity Area

How might we improve data systems for healthcare delivery?

The proposed title of your idea

Uganda Clinical Guideline (USG) App

Please describe your idea.

Our Idea is to develop a UCG App that can be accessed by health professionals and workers for informed decision making

What problem does your idea solve in the market?

The current USG is over 1000 pages that is too bulky for day to day use by any health worker if the purpose for which the same was designed in 1993 is to be achieved. The document is the bible for diagnosis, treatment and management of common health conditions such as HIV, TB and malaria in maternal health and reproductive health but a few facilities and health workers plus professionals have access to it due limited copies. The country this year will spend over $280,000 in printing 40,000 hard copies of the book minus logistics for the health facilities.

Briefly explain how you identified the need or opportunity

Our Idea originated from a training where we were being trained in clinical audits for health facility. During the training we were required to assess health facilities in jinja but to our surprise they didn't have a tool that was very important to treat, diagnose and manage patients, the Uganda clinical guidelines. One of the important tools that is mandatory for health workers, however majority don't have access to it yet posse digital gadgets. We asked if we would provide this on their smartphones and they said if that was possible then it would be much better. From that time we have never settled until now making sure we meet the demand of these health workers.

Who are the beneficiaries of your solution and how will they benefit?

The beneficiaries are health workers and professionals as well as people interested in health that that use digital platforms but have limited access to the Uganda clinical guidelines. We will create a World where every person and every health worker has access to the healthcare information they need to protect their own health and the health of those for whom they are responsible based on informed decisions.

Why are you convinced your solution will solve the problem?

We are convinced because majority of the people have access to digital platforms most especially the smartphones and tablets that are personal. But the most pushing factor is the magnificent increasing number of smartphone users in Uganda that gives us a competitive advantage. secondly, the 40,000 copies that are to be printed this year are not enough to cover over 80,000 health workers and professionals as well as over 7000 health facilities plus the public.

What other initiatives like yours exist out there? How will you differentiate your solution?

What have you done up-to date to test your idea with potential users? What learnings do you have to share?

How will you financially sustain your business?

The government of Uganda through partners will pay an annual fee of 10,000 US dollars for upgrading and maintaining the operations of the Uganda clinical guidelines for health professionals and workers on their digital platforms. The fee will include a percentage for subscription to the store and sustainability.
