How might we improve demand and access to essential maternal health medicines & supplies in Uganda??

The proposed title of your idea

Please describe your idea.

An automated solar powered condom dispenser to provide access to free and premium condoms to every Ugandan. The dispenser will also provide

What problem does your idea solve in the market?

The dispensers will eliminate Stigma associated with buying condoms from people. The dispensers will provide 24/7 access to free condoms to individuals who can't afford the premium ones. Currently they're distributed at the local health centers but these close after working hours and yet the need for condoms isn't time limited. So a dispenser that offers them all year round would solve this issue. The dispensers will also provide access to free sanitary pads to the rural girl child.

Briefly explain how you identified the need or opportunity

I was watching an advert about condoms and the character in the advert couldn't ask a shop attendant for a condom because there were other customers around waiting to make their own orders. So the lead character kept stalling by asking for biscuits hoping the others would leave so he could purchase a pack of condoms. That got me thinking that high levels of stigma affect so many other Ugandans

Who are the beneficiaries of your solution and how will they benefit?

The rural poor who can't afford premium condoms. These individuals will be able to access the condoms at their own convenience from the machines at any time of the day, all year round. Women in rural villages will also be able to access free or premium sanitary pads. Although there is no current government initiative to supply these, the RABA project intends to find donors to fund them.

Why are you convinced your solution will solve the problem?

The dispensers eliminate human interaction during the purchase of condoms and this will deal with the issue of stigma associated with them. Since the dispensers are solar powered they're able to overcome the issue of high costs associated with automated vending machines. The solar powered dispensers will be able to serve place that off the grid.

What other initiatives like yours exist out there? How will you differentiate your solution?

There are condom vending machines in some clubs in the cities but these are accessed by only a handful of people that go to clubs. The RABA depots will be brought closer to the common man and woman in a location that doesn't create any form of segregation.

What have you done up-to date to test your idea with potential users? What learnings do you have to share?

A pilot study on the consumption of free condoms dispensed within residential halls at Makerere University showed that more individuals are comfortable with accessing free condoms from the manual dispensers other than buying them from the canteen or getting free ones from the custodian due to stigma associated with condoms. This study highlighted the fact that even the elite members of society still have societal strangleholds when it comes to the issue of contraceptives. The number of students who have never accessed a condom was even more appalling.

How will you financially sustain your business?

The sale of premium condoms alongside free ones will enable the business to attain financial sustainability.
