Opportunity AreaHow might we improve data systems for healthcare delivery?
The proposed title of your ideaSMARTMAMA We used the words 'SMART' and 'MAMA' because it is mobile-based and provides expectant mothers with solutions to maternal issues
Please describe your idea.A mobile and web app which monitors expectant mothers and gives stakeholders updated patients data, and patients access to services.
What problem does your idea solve in the market?Reducing the infant mortality rate: Health workers do not have statistical information on where, when and how much to deliver to disadvantaged mothers. Mothers are unable to get first-aid for health-related issues on the spot, away from medical facility. Accessing medical facilities is difficult for mothers in isolated areas Some mothers forego basic prenatal care due to low standard of living, increasing the risk of delivery complications
Briefly explain how you identified the need or opportunityWe interacted with Mrs. Kide, a personnel for Village Heath Team, a Government health program for the local communities, Dr. Benna of Kakira Health Centre III, who is the head of midwifery and also Mr. Gregory Mugisha, a member of the local community, who is a father of three. We also assembled statistical information from different online sources to give us a general understanding of the real issues facing expectant mothers e.g according to indexmundi.com, the infant mortality rate is 57.6 deaths/1,000 live births. Daily interaction with different people who necessitate vital, deliberate medical attention yet have limited access to it e.g street mothers and the youth
Who are the beneficiaries of your solution and how will they benefit?-Mothers in remote areas who will gain information on free medical services through VHT by availing information to the VHT workers -Disabled mothers will receive first-aid for health-related issues, emergency transportation and communication with health personnel through data on the mobile application -Government, and Public which will freely view the data for verification and planning purpose which will be able to synchronise data, monitor mothers -Employment for mobile ambulance drivers
Why are you convinced your solution will solve the problem?Since mobile phones are commonly used, and are becoming more popular, therefore even in remote areas the system will have a wide reach VHT is already in existence, and simply requires more accurate and thorough information sources There are people who are willing to avail their vehicles for emergency use Support of the Government in Health-related solutions which reduce infant mortality rate National IDs are mandatory and in wide use, easing the initial registration process
What other initiatives like yours exist out there? How will you differentiate your solution?MUSAWO app, which provides emergency services, appointment management and drug delivery, ours is different because it does not rely on internet access by the user, our data is synchronised among all registered facilities OpenMRS, which is a medical record system platform that manages and handles existing data. Our application is concentrated more on data collection and visualisation in real-time, while providing information and emergency services to users UGMEDICALBUDDY which lists nearby health centres, doctor's whatsapp contacts, and first aid via their application. We, on the other hand, will provide these services through a USSD menu, which doesn't rely on the internet
What have you done up-to date to test your idea with potential users? What learnings do you have to share?Through interaction with potential stakeholders; Dr.Benna, Kakira Health Centre III: -The system will be helpful while dealing with lost mother passports -Automatic reports will be generated -Mobile ambulances can help during emergencies -The system helps them easily plan for pregnant mothers Mr. Gregory Mugisha: -Infant mortality rate will be reduced
How will you financially sustain your business? We charge a fee for service implementation and maintenance, and optionally data analysis. The mobile ambulances pay a commision when registering their vehicles for emergency use.
