Opportunity Area

How might we improve data systems for healthcare delivery?

The proposed title of your idea

Please describe your idea.

This is a service offering to the adolescents(12-22 years),to solve a problem of STI's by examining, screening and treatment.

What problem does your idea solve in the market?

The increased incidence and prevalence of sexually transmitted infections in the country.(80-90% of the world burden-windhoek 2009) These are most times asymptomatic and undiagnosed due to the poor health seeking behaviors of the adolescents e.g going for health care attention when the problem has worsened and its presenting with severe complications that would have been rather prevented by early screening, diagnosis and initiation of treatment. -The risky sexual behaviors of the adolescents predispose the adolescents to sexually transmitted infections.

Briefly explain how you identified the need or opportunity

During my internship at china-Uganda friendship hospital-Naguru,a 15 year old girl presented with a fishy smelling vaginal discharge this had been persistent for months without medical attention. I realized that most adolescents on the out patients and in patients departments where presenting with a chronic sexually transmitted disease most of which had already progressed into the severe complication phases. In Uganda epidemiological studies show that sexually transmitted infections is a public health problem among female and male adolescents 25.5% of the population contracts one of the curable sexually transmitted infections annually(Croatian medical journal 2010)

Who are the beneficiaries of your solution and how will they benefit?

The beneficiaries are adolescents (12-22)years who are majory in secondary school and they will be examined, investigated and treated for the sexually transmitted infections to avoid the likely complications.

Why are you convinced your solution will solve the problem?

The beneficiaries who are secondary school students that pay medical fee on their school fees to the school administration which shall in turn sort the fees for these services and since the major solution of health problems is prevention and early management am sure if we tackle it that way it shall be sorted.

What other initiatives like yours exist out there? How will you differentiate your solution?

Naguru teenage Center exists offering a seemingly similar service and its situated in kampala district only benefiting those young people around it. However, the difference is that it is fixed in one place where the young people have to locate its fixed location whereas A-LIVE UGANDA shall be able to reach to the adolescents at their bases in their schools country wide.

What have you done up-to date to test your idea with potential users? What learnings do you have to share?

I have talked to some secondary school head teachers about the idea like the head teacher of Masuliita secondary school who welcomed the idea and was willing to offer us the opportunity to carry out the services in his school by making a school medical checkup in the following term. Examining , screening and initiation of treatment to the infected students and then make a school health report which will be submitted to the school administration and the relevant health offices in the area like the DHO . Therefore beneficiaries are ready and receptive to the solution and willing to work hand in hand with A-LIVE UGANDA for a better and healthy living.

How will you financially sustain your business?

All my beneficiaries will be required to pay a fee of 10000shs each. This shall be deducted from their school medical fee by the school administration, which money will be used to obtain medical sundries for continuity and also clearing of all dues.
